Accessible Blackpool

Step-free routes, the flat Prom, trams and how to plan a day that works.

Blackpool is flatter than almost any other British resort, and the seafront was rebuilt with wide, level surfaces. That makes a lot of the town straightforward — but the older buildings and the piers vary, so a bit of planning pays off.

The flat bits

  • The Promenade runs level for miles, with wide paths, benches and sea views the whole way.
  • The Comedy Carpet and the area around the Tower is open, paved and easy to cross.
  • Stanley Park has broad, level paths, gardens and a cafe away from the crowds.

Getting around

The modern tram fleet is low-floor with level boarding at the platform stops that run the length of the seafront, and it is usually the easiest way to move between the piers, the Tower and the Pleasure Beach. Heritage trams are a different matter — they are old vehicles with steps.

Attractions

The big indoor attractions — the Tower complex, Madame Tussauds, SEA LIFE, Sandcastle, Showtown, the Zoo — all publish their own access information, and several operate carer or essential-companion schemes. Check each venue's own access page before you book, because arrangements change and some rides and features have their own criteria.

Beach access

Beach wheelchairs and level access points exist along the seafront in season. Availability changes year to year, so contact the seafront services before you travel rather than turning up hoping.

Staying

Our hotels are Victorian and Edwardian townhouses in central Blackpool. That means character, but also stairs — rooms and access vary from building to building. Tell us what you need when you book and we will tell you honestly which of our hotels suits, rather than guessing.
