Blackpool Christmas Markets: dates, stalls and how to do it well

Where the Christmas markets are, what is actually worth buying and eating, and how to combine them with a show and the winter seafront.

Blackpool's Christmas market season runs through late November and December in the town centre, a short walk from the Promenade and the Winter Gardens. It is a compact, food-and-crafts market rather than a vast continental affair — the trick is to treat it as a good two-hour evening rather than the whole reason for the trip, and to build a proper day around it.

Where it is and when to go

The market sits in the town-centre streets and squares around St John's Square, Birley Street and the Houndshill area, with the seasonal ice rink and family attractions nearby. Dates and the exact layout are set each year — check the live listings below for what is confirmed while you are here.

  • Weekday late afternoon is the best time: lights on, stalls fully stocked, no crush.
  • Friday and Saturday evenings are the atmosphere at full volume, and the food queues to match.
  • Sunday afternoon is the family window; stalls sometimes pack up earlier.

What to actually buy

  • Food and drink first. Mulled wine, bratwurst, loaded fries, Yorkshire pudding wraps, churros. This is where the market earns its keep.
  • Local makers. Candles, prints, ceramics, Lancashire cheese, honey and fudge stalls are the ones worth carrying home.
  • Skip the mass-produced stalls you will recognise from every market in the country — the good Blackpool buys are the food producers and the independent makers.
  • Cash and card. Most traders take cards, a handful do not. Carry £20 in cash and you will never be stuck.

Build a proper day around it

2pm: Houndshill and the Church Street independents for shopping under a roof.

3.30pm: the beach or the Promenade while there is still light — ten minutes from the market and a complete change of scene.

4.30pm: the market as the lights come on. Mulled wine, eat as you walk.

6pm: the ice rink, or the Tower Eye for the coast after dark.

7.30pm: pantomime at the Grand Theatre or a show at the Winter Gardens — both are a five-minute walk from the stalls.

Practical notes

  • Dress for standing still in the wind. A market is colder than a walk. Thermals under everything, and a hat.
  • Park once. Talbot Road and Houndshill multi-storeys put you inside the market area; do not try to park on the seafront and walk in on a December Saturday.
  • By train it is a five-minute walk from Blackpool North station to the market.
  • With a pushchair, go before 5pm — the evening crush around the food stalls is genuinely tight.
  • Combine with Manchester or Preston? No need. The point of a Blackpool market trip is that the market, the sea, a show and your hotel are all within a ten-minute walk of each other.

Where to stay

Our hotels are in the quiet streets behind the Winter Gardens, five to ten minutes on foot from the market squares. That means you can carry shopping back mid-afternoon, change, and come back out for the evening — which is the difference between a pleasant day and a long one.

Midweek December rooms are the cheapest of the year, so two nights often costs less than one summer Saturday.
