Come between the end of the Illuminations and Easter and you get a different resort: enormous skies, an empty beach, rooms at their cheapest and locals with time to talk.
What is genuinely better
- The beach. Miles of it, to yourself, with the light doing things it never does in August.
- Prices. Room rates are at their lowest, and midweek lower still.
- Space. No queues at the Tower, no crush on the Prom.
- Weather drama. Storms come in off the Irish Sea and the seafront is the best seat in the house.
What to check before you travel
Some seasonal attractions and rides close or run reduced days out of season, and the Pleasure Beach in particular runs a winter timetable. Check each venue's own site for the dates you are coming — do not assume.
Reliable all-year options
The Tower complex, Madame Tussauds, SEA LIFE, Sandcastle, Showtown, the Grundy, the Grand Theatre, the Winter Gardens and the trams all run through the winter, and the theatre season is at its strongest.
Christmas and New Year
The town does both properly — lights, pantomime, big New Year nights. These are the exception to the cheap-and-quiet rule: they book up early and rates rise.
