Blackpool has a reputation for noise, and it earns it. But the same town does sunsets over the Irish Sea, a Victorian ballroom and long empty beaches at seven in the morning.
An evening that works
1. Late afternoon walk out along North Pier — the oldest and quietest of the three.
2. Sunset from the pier head or the Prom; the west-facing coast means the sun goes down into the sea almost all year.
3. Dinner in town, then the Tower Ballroom if there is dancing on, or the Grand Theatre if there is a show.
Slower daytime
- The Tower Eye on a clear day, for the whole coast at once.
- Stanley Park gardens and the lake, away from the seafront entirely.
- A tram to Lytham for a genteel afternoon and a completely different pace.
- Grundy Art Gallery for an hour of quiet.
Best times to come
Out of season — late autumn through to spring, and midweek any time of year — the beach empties and the town is yours. Illuminations season is spectacular but busy; if you want both, come midweek in the shoulder weeks.
